HDL picks up excess cholesterol from the cells and takes it back to the liver, where it is broken down and excreted from the body or reprocessed. Your body gets in trouble when the cholesterol is overproduced and the HDL is overtaxed and can’t get rid of it. Elevated cholesterol levels are often caused by the standard American diet. It can also be caused from diabetes. Elevated stress factors for prolonged periods of time can disrupt how the body metabolizes cholesterol and thereby increases.
The typical medical management for cholesterol is statin medications. While they may be necessary in some cases, many doctors prescribe them as a matter of routine- because they are afraid their patients won’t take the necessary lifestyle changes that can lower cholesterol naturally.
One theory is that cholesterol is caused by oxidation due to free radicals in the system. Free radicals are like pac men damaging cellular matrix. Free radicals are the by-product of both energy produced by the body’s cells and exposure to pollutants, radiation, medications, and high fats in diet. Oxidation of the cholesterol causes inflammation and plaque buildup in the blood vessel wall which slows down blood flow through the arteries, This causes damage in the artery walls.
