Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that is causes by the buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums. If not removed, it can harden into tartar, which is much harder to remove and can cause inflammation of the gums. There is an alkaline phosphate enzyme that is missing in the saliva that would prevent the occurrence. Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen gums that bleed easily particularly when you brush your teeth. If Gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which is a more severe form of gum disease that can lead to bone loss.
Root causes: poor dental hygiene, bacteria building up on teeth and gums, viral and fungal infections, smoking, diabetes, HIV, stress, pregnancy, birth control pills, poor fitting dental restorations, poor nutrition, and food sensitivities.
To prevent gingivitis, it is important to practice good oral hygiene.
Foods to Avoid: sugar foods, processed foods, candy, undiluted fruit juices, refined grains.
